They can actually be friends, with benefits.
There are actually many tips online on how you can get SEO benefits out of social networking.

Yeah I don't believe that social media is going to kill SEO as well. We still need seo for better crawlability and organic traffic. Both will work great though as social media is very influential

If for anything, social media will drive organic traffic to a site while SEO will remain to be the main driver of driving traffic to your site that you didn't plan for.

Social media will "eat" other types of media. Including free and independent sites, forms....

I think social media can be manipulated, and it would be fine if Google just ignore those links. Anyway, the important links that you obtain via social media marketing, the links from its users blogs, will still be there to boost your rankings.
