There really is no such thing as a new hairstyle. Even innovative looks are variations on the classics. Ponytails, chignons, finger waves, and hair accessories get reinvented for this reason—and this season, they’ve been gently softened. Waves are more billowy than spiraled, and ponytails and buns are tidy without being slick. And when you’re ready for something splashy, all that’s required is one bold accessory. Sometimes a shift in perspective feels like renewal.
1. TOUSLED PONYTAIL
Loose waves spice up a traditional ponytail; long layers look edgy.
How to create the style: Part damp hair in the middle and gather it into a low ponytail, letting shorter layers fall over your ears. “Braid the tail, and when it dries, undo the braid and brush through it,” says Garren. “You’ll have a crinkly wave.”
2. FEATHER CLIP
Large, dramatic feathers and disheveled hair give a classic updo a little craziness.
How to create the style: This hair clip is exaggerated—but not by much. “Accessories look great when worn on the side of the head, close to the face, with a wispy updo,” says Garren. Here, he made a low French twist with fluffy pieces around the hairline.
3. LOOPED BUN
A smooth, slick crown offsets a loose, draped chignon.
How to create the style: Blow-dry hair straight, make a side part, and pull hair back into a tight, low ponytail. Hair-spray the tail and begin to wind it into a bun, but stop after one loop and pin the ends under the elastic. Add a pretty hairpin.
4. FLUFFY WAVES
Soft finger waves with a deep side part have the appeal of old Hollywood.
How to create the style: Clamp a triple-barrel curling iron— it’s easy to use and inexpensive (about $35 on folica.com)—along dry hair, starting well below the roots. Twist each waved section around a finger, clip it to your head until cool, release, and brush.
